A Legacy of Purpose
Long before Sugar Hollow Solar was founded, a deep connection to the land and commitment to stewardship were already part of the family story. Growing up surrounded by the beauty of the Southern Appalachians, founders Doug and his cousin, Phelps, were inspired by generations of people who cared for the mountains, farms and communities they called home.
That same spirit of social and environmental responsibility became the foundation for Sugar Hollow Solar. Founded in 2010, the company was built with a simple but powerful vision: create meaningful jobs while helping protect the planet through clean energy.
The values that guide Sugar Hollow are connected to the family’s history of sustainable agriculture and community investment, dating back to the early 20th century, when Jim McClure founded the Farmer’s Federation Cooperative. His work improved farming practices and ensured fair pricing for local farmers. In more recent years, this care can be seen through McClure’s descendants with Sugar Hollow Solar and other family-owned businesses like Hickory Nut Gap and Flying Cloud Farm. Whether through farming, conservation, or renewable energy, the mission has remained the same: to care for the land and create a better future for the generations that follow.
Today, we continue that legacy as a proud member of the Amicus Solar Cooperative, a network of solar companies committed to the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.
