The Future of Battery Storage: SolarEdge Nexis

Battery storage has come a long way in recent years. Manufacturers like FranklinWH, Tesla, SolarEdge and others are continuing to develop new technology, and homeowners have more options than ever when it comes to storing their solar energy.

With so many battery systems on the market, it can be hard to decipher which option is right for your home, solar system, and the moments you need battery backup the most. At Sugar Hollow Solar, we work closely with battery manufacturers so our customers can stay up to date on the latest storage technologies, and understand how different systems interact with their solar installations. Thanks to the hard work of our technical review board we decided to partner with SolarEdge and begin offering their new Nexis battery backup system to our customers.

Read along to learn what makes the SolarEdge Nexis different, and what homeowners should know before choosing or upgrading  their battery storage system.

What is Battery Storage?

Battery storage is a step toward true energy independence. Batteries can be standalone (charging from your utility grid) or paired with solar. When solar panels produce more electricity than your home needs, that excess energy can be stored in your battery instead of going unused.

When the sun goes down or the grid goes out, you’re then able to draw on that stored energy to power your home or organization.

For many home and business owners, battery storage means:

  • Lessening your dependence on the utility grid

  • Using the solar power you captured during the day, at night

  • Always keeping your lights on, refrigerator cold, and water running even when the grid goes down

  • Leading the charge toward a more renewable energy future

Battery storage can also help you make the most of your utility rates by storing energy when rates are lower and using it when the rates are higher. Capacity, power output, efficiency, charging speed, and system design can all affect how a battery performs. That’s why choosing the right system is about more than simply finding the biggest battery or the newest technology.

Introducing SolarEdge Nexis

Made in the USA, SolarEdge Nexis batteries are FEOC compliant, and therefore eligible for leasing. When paired with your solar array, the Nexis battery stores and optimizes your clean power for when you need it most. With a quicker charge and higher efficiency for both high and low voltage needs compared to many other batteries, the Nexis battery is a truly powerful option.

Sugar Hollow will be offering the three and four stack Nexis options

Nexis features:

  • High Power Conversion Efficiency: Make the most of the energy stored in your battery, whether your home is using a little or a lot of power. When paired with SolarEdge's panel-level optimization technology, Nexis is designed to help maximize the energy your system produces and stores.

  • More kWh Capacity: Get more reliable power backup in an outage with 20 kWh capacity. Your power will stay on longer, when you need it the most.

  • Faster Charging: Fully charge your battery stack in 80 minutes, significantly quicker than leading string optimizer competitors.

  • Built for the Extreme: From freezing winters to sweltering summers, the operating range (-4ºF to +131ºF) is further supported by a built-in heating and cooling system that will activate outside of that range and keep things running. Plus, Nexis is flood-ready in up to 1ft of standing water (for up to 72 hours).

  • Built to Last: Manufactured in the USA using automotive-grade components, Nexis is designed for long-term durability and comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.

What Makes SolarEdge Nexis Different

When comparing battery storage systems, a few key specifications can make a big difference in how a battery performs in your home. The SolarEdge Nexis stands out in several areas, including its capacity, power output, charging speed, and round-trip efficiency.

With a 20 kWh capacity for each 4-battery stack, and the ability to link 4 of these 4-stack batteries, Nexis offers a powerful solution. This battery system can be installed indoors or outdoors, on the ground or mounted on the wall, giving homeowners more flexibility when determining where their battery system will fit best!

Nexis has a 13 kW continuous output and a 14.5 kW during backup operation, giving it the ability to support substantial household loads. Another standout feature is its 13 kW charge rate. A faster charge rate means your battery can replenish its stored energy more quickly when your solar is producing excess power.

And finally, Nexis has a 92% round-trip efficiency, meaning a greater percentage of energy stored in the battery can be used to power your home.

Who Would Benefit From a SolarEdge Nexis Battery?

Every home has different energy needs, so the right battery backup system will look different from one homeowner to the next! SolarEdge Nexis may be a good option for homeowners looking for a battery system that can support larger energy needs, store more solar power, and recharge quickly.

Nexis is also available for Sugar Hollow Solar’s Residential Solar Lease Program, making this a great option for homeowners looking for battery backup without the upfront cost of purchasing a system!
